An Independence Day Message

At least to my mind, our Founding Fathers fought for the ideal that each person should have the opportunity to create in life whatever he or she dreamed possible; that no person should be destined to power or privilege based solely on his lineage; and that every person, according to his thrift and industry, should have the opportunity to rise above whatever circumstances he was born into. They fought, and many gave their lives, for the principles of personal liberty and freedom from oppressive government. They risked committing treason by adopting the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and, with help from allies, subsequently prevailed against a much more well-equipped force. These and other innumerable acts of bravery and courage laid the foundation for this great nation and made it possible for each of us to enjoy our own quest for our “American Dream.”


I find myself reflecting this time of year on the sacrifice of those who have gone before us. I am deeply moved by those who fought for a vision and dream greater than themselves; who were willing to sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to make it possible for future generations to live with freedom and opportunity.


Let us never forget the power that comes from being engaged in a worthy cause; for fighting for something greater than our own self-interest; and for helping to secure opportunity for those who come after us.


I believe the following to be, perhaps, one of the greatest lines ever penned by man:


“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”


May each of us be ever grateful for the blessing of freedom which we daily enjoy.  Happy Independence Day!
