The “Dog Days” of Summer

Thursday, July 31, 2014 3:43 PM | Brian Frederick

As I write this message, it sure feels like we have entered the “Dog Days” of summer. The “Dog Days” of summer is the period of time in July and August when temperatures and humidity in the northern hemisphere are generally at their highest. The term “Dog Days” is a reference to the star Sirius (referred to as the “Dog Star”) in the Canis Major constellation. Early Greek and Roman astronomers observed that, during the summer months, Sirius would rise and fall with the sun and they believed Sirius contributed to the heat of these summer months! Hence the term “Dog Days” was born. Whatever the source, the term feels appropriate for Phoenix in in the summer!

As a child, my younger brother and I would fly to Arizona most summers to visit my father. I still remember having flight complications in June of 1990 when the temperature reached over 120° F! The details are fuzzy, but I think the pilot almost couldn’t land the plane because of the heat! It may have actually been the all-time record setting day for Phoenix . All I know for sure is that it was hot! For your edification here are some interesting statistics from http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/ about the Phoenix heat.
