The Power of Commitment

Thursday, September 04, 2014 2:29 PM | Brian Frederick

In previous messages, I have shared some of my favorite quotes. These are thoughts that have special meaning and relevance in my life and relevance in our work in the FPA of Greater Phoenix. My hope is that they might be as beneficial or inspirational to a reader as they have been to me. Today, I would like to share another quote, this time from the German author, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back – Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”     - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Perhaps this principle was well illustrated by the command from military leaders past to “burn the boats.” How would each of us live our lives differently if there was no “plan b”? And what is stopping us from having that level of commitment in our work, relationships, communities, etc. currently? What is holding us back?

I hope that each of us has a vision for what we want our lives to be and for the legacy we want to leave. While I would not endeavor to suggest what this vision should be for each person, I submit that life is more powerfully lived when we are committed to a cause greater than ourselves. I know from experience that whatever our personal vision is, it is achievable. We just have to fully commit to making it happen.

As a chapter, we have a vision to be the premier source of financial planning professional development and continuing education in the valley. We are committed to making that vision a reality. In the coming months, you will see additional measures that we have taken to fulfill this commitment. But the commitment of the board alone is not enough. We need each chapter member to be engaged in helping us realize our vision. So, if you have suggestions, please share them. If you have concerns, please voice them, and most of all, get involved!

Sincerely,

Jason Miller, CFP®
