It is an honor and a pleasure to represent our chapter as the 2015 President.  We have a lot going for us and we are bringing this momentum to the next level.  We are fortunate to have a tremendous history of stellar individuals who have contributed to make our chapter what it is today and I am grateful for the practitioners who have served before me and those who will serve afterwards.

We are in the process of evolving with our Executive Director transition.  We owe a great deal of gratitude to our outgoing ED, Jo Lynne Hutchinson, for her 27+ years of service with our chapter.  Our incoming Executive Director, Melissa Kemp, has brought her organization, Premium Organization, in to assist in running the chapter from a strategic as well as administrative level.  We are excited about this and will embrace it to the best of our abilities.

I’m thrilled to announce our 2015 board of directors as they are high-caliber consummate professionals.  The work we all do together is critical to the success of our mission and vision and I appreciate them all for who they are and what they have to contribute to the chapter and our profession.

The executive committee and board directorships for 2015 are as follows:

    Executive Committee:

    President – Darin Shebesta, CFP®

V.P./President Elect – Marcus Johnson, CFP® (newly certified - Congratulations!)

At Large - Marcus Seiter, CFP®

I thought it would be great to share the vision of our chapter to get us from the present to why we exist: to be the premiere source of financial planning professional development and continuing education in the Valley by cultivating our core values of competence, integrity, relationships and stewardship. This vision should serve as the lens through which we view our responsibilities and guide our decision making. Each of our board directors has set strategic initiatives for 2015 and assembled committees to contribute to fulfilling that vision.

This is our chapter. It exists to serve the needs of the membership base and we each have a responsibility to help make it the best it can be. I would invite each of you to consider what you can do in 2015 to make our chapter even better.  One action that would make a significant difference is you sharing the organization with a colleague/strategic partner/peer by inviting them to each chapter meeting to expand our membership in quality and quantity.

If you have ideas, don’t keep them a secret. If you have concerns, we want to know.  We want to hear what you have to say and we want to provide the greatest value possible because we would not exist without you.

Like many of you, I am passionate about the financial planning profession, the CFP® marks and the Financial Planning Association and look forward to outstanding memories and results in 2015!

    President-Elect’s Thanks for 2014

-I want to thank our outgoing President, Jason Miller, for doing an exceptional job in steering the ship in a solid direction.  Jason - you are a consummate professional and I value you highly for who you are and what you contribute.  Thank you for providing a track for me to run on which is a solid foundation for success.

-I want to thank our outgoing NexGen Director, Alex Carracedo, for carrying the torch for the next generation of financial planners and helping me transition out of that role to the overall chapter.  Alex - you have kept the fire lit for the up and coming planners in the Valley and I'm grateful for your contribution.

-I want to acknowledge our Chair, Beverly Bowers, for her past presidential guidance on various matters and for having a heart of gold for all those she interacts with.

-I am grateful for our outgoing Secretary/Treasurer, Kathleen Murray, for taking on double duty with minutes and financials for all these years.  I appreciate your commitment to the profession.

-I want to thank Chris Hess for his work for Partnership in securing and sustaining the organizations that invest in our chapter's success.

What a wonderful “job” this has been all these years.  What’s that old saying about “find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life?”  Now that my time as executive director for the chapter is coming to a close, I can honestly agree with that saying.   I have loved working with you all through these years.

Many things have changed over so many years – technology, etc. – but what hasn’t changed is the reason for this chapter to exist and some of our products – a newsletter each month. One thing that has not changed is the need for someone to proof the newsletters I would create.  So I would be very remiss if I didn’t thank two ladies who have helped me out so much – Sue Larkin and Donna Hasbach.  For a couple of decades, Sue has proofed the chapter newsletter after I was through doing my thing with it; and then Donna has been proofing it also for about the last five years since leaving the board of directors.  A few times, typos have slipped through but believe me, those were on my head, not theirs!

In this position, my main contact is the chapter president. I appreciate so much the many presidents I have worked with, 23 in number (because some did it twice).  They have been a stellar group of individuals who worked hard to see that this organization provides to our chapter members those things that would help each and every one to grow and develop.  The members of the board of directors have proven to be hard working individuals who: cooperated and “played together” well in order to keep this chapter going in the right direction; helped our members have learning experiences and provided opportunities to meet people who could help them in some way; and to serve their clients and the consuming public to have their own financial success.

If you’re a numbers person, there have been 122 individuals on the board of directors and the reason there aren’t higher numbers is that so many of them have served more than one year.  Here’s how it breaks down on numbers:

Michael Fischer – 13 years                  Dale Walters -10 years

Denise Reed - 10 years                          Sue Larkin - 9 years

Darin Shebesta - 6 years                       And too many to list at 5 years!!!

Let’s not even go into how many chapter meetings there have  been, board meetings, executive committee meetings, Strategic Planning Meetings, and trips to Chapter Leadership Conferences held by by National FPA.  We’re talking BIG numbers…..but I’m NOT a numbers person.

I can’t say I will miss the actual work…….but I can say that I will miss having the opportunity to be with you on an ongoing basis.  I was informed that I can come to chapter meetings any time AT NO CHARGE……..so I’ll pop in occasionally to see if all of you are behaving yourselves!!

The many tokens of support, love and friendship from you all in various forms has been most appreciated as I’m ready to enter a new phase of life.  Your actions and who you are are part of the wonderful memories I take with me going forward.

My love, appreciation and best wishes to you all,

    Jo Lynne Hutchinson

It has been an absolute privilege to serve as your chapter President over the past year! It is an honor to be surrounded by and serve with so many wonderful people who share similar values. This year we have made great strides in advancing the mission and vision of our chapter and I see bright things in store for the future!

At this time, I would be remiss if I failed to recognize and thank our departing board members who have served so diligently over the past year(s).

    Outgoing Board Members

First, I would like to thank our Chair and Past-President, Bev Bowers. Bev has served our chapter selflessly, always volunteering to take on additional projects and never asking for any recognition in return. She has been a great example to me personally and made an enormous contribution to our chapter. Bev has a huge heart and I can’t imagine what the world would be like if everyone was as willing to give of themselves as she has been. I will sincerely miss serving with her. Thank you, Bev!

Kathleen Murray has served as our chapter Secretary/Treasurer for five years and has done an exemplary job. In the time I have served with Kathleen, I can’t remember her ever missing a single meeting, call or deadline. She is a consummate professional. Her diligence, work ethic, and attention to detail will be difficult to replace. Thank you, Kathleen!

Suzanne Muusers has led our Public Relations efforts over the last five years. Under her leadership, we have made vast improvements in our marketing materials, social media strategy, meeting announcements, and press coverage. Most recently, Suzanne organized the Money Makeover Series which has been featured in the Arizona Republic. We have been fortunate to have someone with her expertise in this role. And while her time on the board has come to an end, she will continue to serve on our public relations committee to help continue the good work she started! Thank you, Suzanne!

As you are all aware, our chapter partners are an invaluable part of the success of our chapter. This year, we were fortunate to have Chris Hess as our Partnership Director. Chris brought a fresh perspective and was instrumental in helping to redesign our partnership packages. We had a successful year and our partners have been delivered great value. Thank you, Chris!

One of the most fun things we do each year is our annual Financial Planning Day. For the past couple of years, the work of organizing this day has been done enthusiastically by Gary Croatt. It is always a pleasure to see Gary. He carries a perpetually positive attitude and always seems to be enjoying himself. I will miss his cheerfulness and what he has brought to our board. Thank you, Gary!

Our local NexGen group, many of whom represent the future of our profession, was led this year by Alex Carracedo. Alex brought great ideas and energy to this role and organized several wonderful events, including valuable charity work and events with other organizations. His contribution to the next generation of financial planners is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Alex!

Our 2015 board will be comprised as follows:

It is with very mixed emotions that I share the news that, after 27 years as Executive Director of the FPA of Greater Phoenix and its predecessor organizations, Jo Lynne Hutchinson has announced her decision to retire at the end of our 2014 calendar year.

Jo Lynne has meant so much to our organization; providing stability, continuity and a positive attitude for so many years and it will be impossible to replace her. I know how much she means to so many in our chapter, including myself. Her smile brightens the room and many times she has brought warmth to my day just through a short conversation. So…while I am happy to see her enjoy a much deserved retirement with Brian, I will miss her greatly.

The awesome news is that we have the opportunity to formally honor her December 2nd at the Phoenix Country Club. Make sure to register early at https://jlh.wildapricot.org/ .

In light of this change, the Board has voted to approve Premium Organization as the organization that will handle administrative matters for the chapter going forward. The Board has also voted to approve Melissa Kemp, CFP® to serve as Executive Director. As many of you are well aware Melissa’s company, Premium Organization, handles administrative responsibilities for the Central Arizona Estate Planning Council, the East Valley Estate Planning Council and the Planned Giving Roundtable of Arizona. She has expertise in working with Professional Associations in this capacity and we look forward to leveraging her knowledge and passion for the industry. In Melissa’s role as Executive Director, she will primarily function as a strategic partner helping to drive the mission and vision of the FPA of Greater Phoenix.

We are excited about this partnership and feel it will allow us to provide continuity in the administration of Chapter affairs and position us to drive our strategic initiatives moving forward. When you have a chance, please take the opportunity to thank Jo Lynne for her many years of dedicated service and to congratulate and welcome Melissa Kemp and Premium Organization in her new role.

In the June President’s Message, I highlighted some of the wonderful work our Board was engaged in. Well, the Board of Directors of the FPA of Greater Phoenix continues to do fantastic work on behalf of our chapter and today I would like to share a few more updates with you.

    Technology

I previously highlighted the launch of our newly designed chapter website which includes exciting new features. Today I am pleased to report that one of those features, our local job board, is up and running! We launched this job board in an effort to help connect our chapter members with new and exciting career possibilities. We have several positions already posted and I am sure many more to follow! The job board can be found at the following link: http://fpaogp.wildapricot.org/jobs. Also included at this link are instructions on how to submit an opportunity to be posted. Please take advantage of this exciting resource.

    Public Relations

Our amazing Public Relations Director, Suzanne Muusers, has now successfully organized a “Money Makeover” series with Russ Wiles at the Arizona Republic. This is an amazing opportunity for a member of the community to receive pro bono financial planning advice from a local CFP® professional. Both are then featured in an article in the Arizona Republic highlighting their progress. To date, the AZ Republic has aired two such stories with two more in progress! This is great publicity for our chapter, the chapter members who participate and those receive the advice. Please take the opportunity to congratulate Suzanne on this big win for our chapter!

    Lifelong Learning

We have had a very successful year of programming thus far with average meeting attendance of 76 and average speaker and program scores of 4.4 out of 5. And the program score for our annual symposium was 4.8 out of 5! We have had the privilege of hearing from top notch speakers such as Michael Kitces, Joe Duran, Dan Candura and Sameer Jain. These speaker and program scores reflect the dedication of our chapter to becoming the premier source of financial planning professional development and continuing education in the Valley. Many thanks go out to Robyn Gerke for her hard work as our Director of Lifelong Learning. We are looking forward to another great year!

This and much more is being done behind the scenes to make our chapter successful. I hope we all appreciate the work that is being done and take the time to recognize those serving.
